THE HAUNTED HOUSE, DUPPAS HILL, CROYDON
‘The Haunted House’ visual poem explores the space of a Victorian house built in Croydon ( London ) in 1839 and abandoned since 2008. The house is owned by the Terranova Sea Cadets who cannot afford to have it renovated.
In 2011 an arson destroyed part of the house roof and in 2014 an homeless was found dead in the back of the building due to a fire started by two teenagers who were dangerously playing inside the house. Since then the building, that has been squatted for many years, has been renamed by locals ‘The Haunted House’.
THE ART OF MAKING
The video explores traditional techniques and specific gestures made in cutting and shaping
pasta by hand building a parallel with similar activities shot by Sicilian director Vittorio De Seta
more than 50 years ago. The art of making is still practiced under some zealous roofs of Sicily.
SIACE paper factory was established in 1964. The factory was specialized in the production of
Kraft paper for packaging. The company closed down in 1986. Following a number of fires occurred
within the SIACE plot, some investigations were carried out revealing the presence of large
amounts of Eternit ( asbestos-cement ) in many of the factory’s roofs. In 2000 the Catania Province
purchased the derelict SIACE with the intention to remove the asbestos from the area.
14 years have passed and the cleansing has not yet ended.
The video explores the factory space as it is today.

THE RELATIVITY OF SERIALISM
The structure of Time can become the structure of Space and vice versa.
Bill Evans’s Twelve-Tone Tune [ serialism applied to jazz music ] and Charlie Chaplin ‘ The Circus’
show how a musical composition can be transformed into a visual pattern.
The three scenes of the movie have been selected for their similar spatial relativity and edited so to
follow the three musical instruments which the composition is made of : piano, drum and double bass.
The sharp distinction between the parts evolves in an indistinguishable whole towards the end.
Serialism in music is comparable to the cut-up technique in writing, both born in the 20s
and re-edited in the 50s-60s.
